Playa Cosón, Las Terrenas: the complete guide

Playa Cosón is the longest beach in Las Terrenas, west of the village on the Samaná peninsula. Golden sand, leaning coconut palms, calm water and very few people: it is made up of several bays, the northernmost of which is the quietest. It is less than a ten-minute drive from the centre of Las Terrenas.

Where is Playa Cosón?

Playa Cosón stretches west of Las Terrenas, along the north coast of the Samaná peninsula in the Dominican Republic. It is the longest beach in the area — you can walk for kilometres without meeting anyone.

To the north it ends at Punta Bonita, the rocky point that separates it from Playa Bonita. From the first bay, that point is about a twenty-minute walk along the sand.

How do you get to Playa Cosón?

By car, quad, scooter or taxi from Las Terrenas: the road follows the coast westwards and the beach has several access points.

The first bay, to the north, is reached by a small road that mainly serves residences. There is no large car park and no shops on the waterfront, which discourages day visitors. That is exactly why it stays quiet: no crowds, no loud music, no line of vendors.

A vehicle is still recommended if you are staying in the area: the beach is a few minutes away on foot, but the grocery store and the centre of Las Terrenas are a five-minute drive. For the arrival from the airport, our guide Getting to Las Terrenas covers flights and transfers.

What is the beach like?

Golden, firm sand lined with coconut palms leaning towards the sea, and water that stays clear and calm across most of the bay. In places, a low breakwater wall separates the sand from the vegetation — you can walk or run along it for several hundred metres.

That firm sand makes Cosón an excellent place to run at sunrise, facing the sea, heading towards Punta Bonita.

What is the best time of day?

Early morning, the beach is empty, the water is at its clearest and fish are visible at the point. That is the time for running, swimming and snorkelling.

But the real moment is the evening. At sunset the sea goes completely still and the light changes everything: it is what most visitors remember, and the one time not to miss if you only come once.

Where can you snorkel at Playa Cosón?

The best spot is the point at Punta Bonita, which separates Playa Cosón from Playa Bonita. Go early in the morning: the sea is calmer, there are fewer people in the water, and you will see noticeably more fish than in the middle of the day.

Bring your own mask — there is no equipment rental on this stretch of beach.

Sand dollars: what you should know

Playa Cosón is full of them. With a mask you will easily spot them in the sand, in shallow water.

The rule is simple: a brown sand dollar is alive, a white one is dead. Only collect the white ones. Brown sand dollars are living animals that keep the bay in balance — out of the water, they die within minutes.

Where can you eat and drink on the beach?

The Ocean Grill, the restaurant of the Cosón Bay Hotel & Residences, sits directly on the sand; sun loungers are available if you eat or drink there.

About a thirty-minute walk along the sand takes you to El Mosquito, the beach hotel and restaurant under the palms of Playa Cosón, and to Casa Grande, the beach club of Playa Bonita, on the far side of the point.
